Book of Mormon Stories

I figured I wouldn’t have a lot of opportunities to over-indulge myself in an arrangement, so I had to make the most of this one.  For some reason, I had the idea of Scott Joplin sitting down at a piano and playing a ragtime version of this.  Now I’m not a ragtime guitarist, so I had to kind of figure out how to do it with the thumb mimicking the left hand on the piano and jumping around the octaves.  So that’s why I only did it for the first verse.  After that, it all went downhill.  There’s some Robert Johnson in there, Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), and even some Stevie Ray Vaughan.  So I guess this is what it would sound like if all of them had been mormon and in charge of Primary sharing time.

The song builds in notes and speed as it progresses – just like the Lamanites in ancient history (wink).  Some of it’s a little sloppy. But hey, it was late.  (This also explains why I look wasted in the lesson video).

So have fun with this one.  This type of arrangement will not be the norm on this site, so I had to make the most of it while I had it.  So if you like it, cool.  If not, sorry.  I’ll get back to the mushy stuff next month.

About Ben Howington

I'm just an average Mormon trying to offset the filth out there on the internet, one guitar arrangement at a time. ( Profile)

  1. This is such a fantastic idea to share your music. I love the YouTube channel, and that you include lessons and the music!! Great work man!

  2. Tyler & Terrah Harper

This is an awesome arrangement, Ben! Do you have a cd / songs on iTunes available to buy? Your work is GREAT!

    P.S. Tell Annie ‘hello’! :)

  3. Wow. This was ridiculous and so awesome. I envisioned Moroni head-bobbing to this jam. Thanks for the unleashed version. I LOVE it. Your talent is so fun to watch.

  4. I suppose it’s possible that I could love this more, but I really don’t see how. Rad, Ben. Just rad. And when you take the pick out of your mouth and start to go to town? My favorite.

  5. Hi Ben–Brigitte put a link to this video up on FB. This song is fantastic! And I thought I was tired of Primary songs . . . Such a wonderful, fun version. It’s nice to see what people are up to after all these years. :) Can’t wait to hear more of your stuff!

  6. Oh you’ve got to be kidding me! This is ridiculously good! Any chance you are going to make a cd or make the songs downlaodable? I would pay good money to jam to this Sunday morning while getting ready for church.

  7. One more thing, can you even imagine what would have happened if you played this back in college at guitars unplugged? The mormon filled auditorium would have erupted in the most insane applause ever witnessed by man or beast. Once again, so so rad.

  8. So far this is my favorite arrangement by you and the one i have most fun playing, thank you I can’t wait to see what’s next!
