Book of Mormon Stories

So I guess this is what it would sound like if Robert Johnson, Mark Knopfler and Stevie Ray Vaughan had been mormon and in charge of Primary sharing time.

I figured I wouldn’t have a lot of opportunities to over-indulge myself in an arrangement, so I had to make the most of this one.  For some reason, I had the idea of Scott Joplin sitting down at a piano and playing a ragtime version of this.  Now I’m not a ragtime guitarist, so I had to kind of figure out how to do it with the thumb mimicking the left hand on the piano and jumping around the octaves.  So that’s why I only did it for the first verse.  After that, it all went downhill.  There’s some Robert Johnson in there, Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), and even some Stevie Ray Vaughan.  So I guess this is what it would sound like if all of them had been mormon and in charge of Primary sharing time.

The song builds in notes and speed as it progresses – just like the Lamanites in ancient history (wink).  Some of it’s a little sloppy. But hey, it was late.  (This also explains why I look wasted in the lesson video).

So have fun with this one.  This type of arrangement will not be the norm on this site, so I had to make the most of it while I had it.  So if you like it, cool.  If not, sorry.  I’ll get back to the mushy stuff next month.

Thanks! Not at the moment. I figure I’ll probably do that once I’ve got more arrangements done. Right now I’m at a whopping three. So maybe in a year once I’m at 12 :)

I suppose it’s possible that I could love this more, but I really don’t see how. Rad, Ben. Just rad. And when you take the pick out of your mouth and start to go to town? My favorite.

HOLY FREAK! That was incredible! Only, what’s the point of making the transcript if it’s so mind-blowing that no one else can play it?!
    Great Job! Keep it up.

Hey man, are you palm-muting what… the top 3 strings in the first couple verses? and then leaving open the G, B, and E?

Yep. It gives the base notes more of a thump. But you have to really dig into them.

Hi Ben–Brigitte put a link to this video up on FB. This song is fantastic! And I thought I was tired of Primary songs . . . Such a wonderful, fun version. It’s nice to see what people are up to after all these years. :) Can’t wait to hear more of your stuff!

Oh you’ve got to be kidding me! This is ridiculously good! Any chance you are going to make a cd or make the songs downlaodable? I would pay good money to jam to this Sunday morning while getting ready for church.

One more thing, can you even imagine what would have happened if you played this back in college at guitars unplugged? The mormon filled auditorium would have erupted in the most insane applause ever witnessed by man or beast. Once again, so so rad.
