With so many Christmas songs centered on Santa Claus, snow, presents, etc. I think Mary Did You Know was a welcome addition to the Christmas catalog of popular songs when it was written in 1991. (To be clear, the lyrics were written in 1984, but the music wasn’t written until 1991 when it was first recorded.) Most of the popular Christmas songs we know (excluding carols) come from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. You can hear it in the jazzier chords all of them use. So the fact that this is written in a minor key, really resonates with me.
I often think of Mary at Christmas time. I have four kids and I know what those last few weeks before giving birth are like. Thinking about the circumstances she was in gives me even more adoration for her. To me, she embodies a strength and humility. For that reason, I wanted to spice up this song and give it a little more strength than how it’s usually played. I hope you like it.
And to answer the question… Yes, I think she knew.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you delivered, will soon deliver you
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would calm the storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby
You kiss the face of God
Mary, did you know?
Mary, did you know?
The blind will see, the deaf will hear
The dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
Is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
That sleeping child you’re
Holding is the great, I Am

Posted at 20:59h, 30 DecemberSuch a wonderful arrangement! I was able to learn and play this arrangement on Christmas Eve for my family. I greatly appreciate the time and energy you put into making these beautiful and powerful renditions of spiritual songs and hymns. It’s amazing how the guitar can really speak the soul through your playing. Keep it up! I love being able to learn how to play your take on these songs with the interactive MOTAB you provide (I even got to play Be Still My Soul and I’m Trying to be Like Jesus in church a while ago!). I can’t wait to see what you have in store! You’re the best.

It would be such a blessing!!
